Nominon: Terra necrosis
28/11/08 || Daemonomania
It’s pretty rare these days that I come across an album I love right away. Amidst a sea of metal (which would be hard to navigate) most bands are either good or mediocre. Nominon, however, have certainly placed their hand down the front of my slacks and are intent on making my next visit to the cleaner’s full of awkward explanations. Let’s return the favor, shall we?
This is what I keep hoping for when I hear a band is bringing early 90’s Stockholm back from the grave. Or back into the grave. More on Grave later. Not a bunch of copycats, not a bland and unmemorable pile of riffs. “Terra necrosis” takes the blueprint laid down by the musty forefathers of Swedeath and puts their own spin on it. They succeed mightily. They have a song called “Ebola.” I think I could end the review right there.
But I won’t. In terms of band comparisons, I’d say these guys take a lot of cues from a band I’ve never mentioned before and will never mention again. But they take “Into the grave,” production and all, into the next millennium by throwing in blasts, cool and unexpected melodies, and a whole lotta evil. Grave themselves tried to bring back this style with their latest, “Dominion VIII,” but I can’t say they succeeded. Looks like Nominon has outgraved you, my friends. Or engraved you. Something like that.
Even the lyrics have that same blasphemous but uneducated feel that “You’ll never see” fans will enjoy. Like I bet it sucks to be God’s son. I’ll bet it does too, at least if you listen to death and black metal all the time. Imagine poor Jeebus playing some Nominon up in his bright shiny magic land a tiny bit above the clouds, slowly realizing there is a whole genre of music intent on insulting him. He probably isn’t feeling too pleased. And if you take no pleasure from the lyrics to the aforementioned “Ebola” or “Bane appetite,” well you’re a fuckin’ fuck. You heard me right, big guy.
So expect a downtuned, menacing assault littered with doomy chunks on highlights like “Release in Death,” “Among the Beasts & Ancient Slumber” (?), and “Tabula Rasa.” Every song on the second half of the album is pure gold. There will be absolutely no need to pull your finger out of your anus and hit the skip button – the live track at the end is crud but if you like live tracks then go fer it. So wait no longer. I promise – this isn’t “Kaamos,” this is “Resurrection through carnage.” Even better, in fact. I nominonminate these guys the strongest retro-Swedes I’ve heard in a long time.
8 asses kicked around, into, out of, back from, and above the grave out of 10.
